When your mind won't quiet down

Specialized anxiety treatment for women in Alabama and Florida.

What Is Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural response to stress and danger — it exists to protect you. But when it becomes chronic, overwhelming, or starts interfering with daily life, it stops being protective and starts being its own problem. You can know rationally that you're safe and still feel your heart racing, your thoughts spiraling, your body braced for something that isn't coming.

That's because anxiety isn't just a thinking problem. It's stored somatically — in the body and nervous system — which is why understanding it intellectually often isn't enough to make it stop.

Common forms of anxiety include:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — persistent, excessive worry about everyday situations, often accompanied by restlessness, muscle tension, and disrupted sleep.

Social Anxiety — intense fear of social situations leading to avoidance of interactions, public speaking, or performing in front of others.

Panic Disorder — recurrent panic attacks characterized by sudden intense fear, racing heart, shortness of breath, and a sense of impending doom.

Phobias — specific, irrational fears of objects, situations, or activities that lead to avoidance behavior.

It's worth noting that anxiety can also have physical causes — certain medications, brain injuries, and some neurological conditions can increase anxiety in ways that therapy alone cannot address. If this may be relevant to your situation, it's worth discussing with your doctor.

How We Work Together

I use somatic tapping and brainspotting to work with anxiety at the level where it's actually stored — in the body and nervous system, not just the mind. Both approaches use body-based techniques to identify and release the underlying causes of anxious responses rather than simply managing symptoms.

Alongside somatic work we use cognitive behavioral strategies to identify thought patterns that feed anxiety and develop more helpful ways of responding. We also work on self-regulation — practical tools you can use outside of sessions to calm your nervous system when anxiety spikes. Somatic tapping in particular is easy to use on your own and many clients find it becomes an effective daily practice.

The goal is not just to feel better in sessions — it's to build a nervous system that no longer defaults to high alert.
